In 2018 the Australian Republic Movement put the call out to Australian high school students to enter the Republic Essay Competition. They were blown away by the calibre of the entries, with students from across the country tackling the topic "Young Australians Deserve To Have A Say On An Australian Head Of State."
Gihansa Samarawickrema, a Year 11 student from Victoria, wrote the winning entry and her essay was published last week by the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age - you can read it here.
In second place is
Orla Latawski from WA and in third place Sis ophie Macdonald from NSW. The full shortlist can be seen here.
This is an excellent opportunity to recognise and reward talented young writers and encourage future leaders to reflect on Australian civics and citizenshi.
